Additional Insured (AI)

A party named on another entity’s insurance policy via endorsement, extending coverage to them.

An Additional Insured is a party (often a general contractor or property owner) who is added to another party's insurance policy through a formal endorsement. The endorsement extends the policy's coverage to the Additional Insured for liability arising from the named insured's operations. In construction, GCs typically require subcontractors to name them as Additional Insured on the sub's Commercial General Liability policy so that if the sub's work causes a claim, the sub's insurer defends the GC rather than forcing the GC's own insurance to respond. The two most common endorsement forms for this are CG 20 10 (ongoing operations) and CG 20 37 (completed operations).
